Healthfest

For my Kettlecorn project, I'm going to the Healthquest event that will be held at the ARC on October 21 from 9 am- 2:30 pm. It's a free event and is a day full of events that are related to health. You have the opportunity to get health screenings and learn how to keep yourself healthy during this upcoming flu season. There will be presentations and exhibits teaching visitors new ways to be healthy and demonstrations on how to stay physically active. The SRU dance department will be performing and there will also be representatives from the Physical Education Department answering questions and showing people the correct way to exercise and take care of themselves.

Dance Until You Drop

The most exciting things going on on campus are usually sporting events. Although dance may not be a sport to most, it is an art and it also takes a lot of time and talent from the SRU students. The dance department was recently nationally ranked and was voted the second best school for dance in Pennsylvania. I think the arts need more appreciation so I'm going to fill you in on the latest dance news at the University.

Should people remain virgins until they are married? This question is very controversial in today's society. Parents don't want to encourage their children to have sex outside of marriage for many reasons, the most common being teen pregnancy. However, sex has become a more open topic in the last decade. The world we live in has no problem talking about sex openly. Sex scenes are shown on TV and in movies and people hardly think twice about it. We now have shows like 16 & pregnant that show what it's like to face the "consequences" of sex at a young age.

Some parents know that their kids are likely to have sex and say that as long as their children are using protection then that's all the parents can hope for. 61% of teens are sexually active by age 18. If they know that their kids are going to be sexually active anyway, the most they can do is teach them about safe sex.

The question of remaining a virgin until marriage is something that is most directly linked to a persons morals or religious beliefs. The Catholic Church believes that you should not lose your virginity until you are married. Sex is a sacred act between a husband and a wife and it's meant for "love and not lust." Psychologists say that teens who are sexually active at a young age can have negative psychological consequences. These include regret, loss of self- respect and self- esteem, worries about pregnancy, and stunting of personal development.

Another reason people advocate virginity until marriage is the less likelihood of contracting an STD. Each year, 1 in 4 teens contracts an STD. The more sexual partners you have the more likely you are to contract some type of STD which can be very harmful to your body and very easily spread through sexual contact. If you save your virginity until marriage, it is most likely that you will not contract an STD because both people are virgins and have not had sexual contact with another person. There's a lot of health benefits that come with only having one sexual partner.

At the same time, sex also has a lot of health benefits. It relieves stress and can be a great workout. It's something that can be enjoyed between two people when the time is right. Most couples say that intimacy is one of the key parts of their relationship. Most healthy relationships center around intimacy.

Regardless of the facts, sex now plays a key role in our society and each person is in control of their own sex life.

My name is Laura and I'm a senior public relations major at Slippery Rock University. I wanted to take new- media journalism because I'm interested in how media plays a key role in PR. I took a class on social media last semester which I found very interesting and have since decided that I want to work in social media upon graduation. I thought that this class would help expand my knowledge and make me more marketable to future employers.

I love Walt Disney World and have been there 14 times. It's my favorite place in the world and I have wanted to work there since I was a little kid. My dream job would be to work in their social media department and I plan on making that happen as soon as I can. I danced for 15 years and still teach on the side. I love dance and had the opportunity to dance several times in the ABC Holiday Spectacular Disney Parks Parade that airs on ABC Christmas morning. I want to combine my love for Disney with my love for dance and work with the Dance the Magic organization that set up all of these great opportunities for my dance studio and others across the United States. I think it would be awesome to work with different dance studios and promote their talent and the parade while being in my favorite place. It's crazy to think that all of my dreams could become a reality once I graduate in May, but I couldn't be more excited to see what the future holds!

My little dancers before the parade this past year.

A traditional news outlet that interests me is ABC News. Disney owns ABC so obviously it's something that interests me.  I like ABC News because they're up to date on all the breaking news and I can easily access it from my phone or laptop. If I don't work for Disney World I would enjoy working for ABC or one of their affiliates. I've always loved New York City as a back up place to live :)

A non traditional news outlet that interests me is obviously Disney related. Walt Disney World News has all of the latest information and photos of everything Disney. People not familiar with Disney probably think this is very weird, but if you have any interest in Disney it's a great place to go for information. They give you tips on what resorts to stay at, what parks to visit at which times, places to eat, and so much more. They give you information on new rides being released and all of the new and exciting renovations that are coming to Walt Disney World. It's a great place for me to stay up to date on everything happening at the place I love most.
